There is no such thing as a free market

The debate carries on across the internet into Amazon’s removal of some erotica titles without notice or meaningful explanation. There is a range of views on this but almost unanimous agreement that Amazon has a “right” to choose what it sells because of the “free market”.

It doesn’t matter what you say to these happy free marketeers, they simply will not accept there is no such thing in the world as a free market. It’s not necessary to go into arcane economics. Does your country have a tax system? Yes? Then it isn’t a free market, is it?

Society regulates commerce. Not always well but always to some degree. In exchange for allowing a company to do business, it must submit to that regulation; and in exchange for being allowed a monopoly (Amazon controls 70-80% of the ebook market), it must submit to substantial regulation.

Whether you agree with me or not that part of that regulation in Amazon’s case should be that it be obliged to sell whatever is legal, the free market argument is utterly bogus but frighteningly widely held.
